Event Details

Join the Portland Branch for a tour of the East Portland Community Center, targeting LEED Platinum. The tour will include a discussion with the design team.

Key green features include:

•    100% of stormwater will be retained and treated on-site

•    30% potable water savings from low flow showers with metered controls, and low flow faucets.

•    The pool filters will be backwashed using an innovative system that reduces the amount of water required and frequency of use saving up to 1.5 million gallons of water annually.

•    Structural materials used as finish materials throughout, reducing the material usage by approximately 25% when compared to a typical building.

•    Heat is recovered from air exhausted from the natatorium is used to heat the pool water.

•    Variable speed pumps that save energy by varying the speed of the pump in response to the requirements of the system. 

•    A highly efficient building envelope with increased roof and wall insulation, which exceeds Oregon Energy Code by 60%. %.

•    Light monitors facing north and south provide maximum natural illumination and reduce energy used by electric lighting by 60%.

•    Occupancy sensors are provided which shut off lighting when rooms are not in use providing additional energy savings.

•    Glazing selected to maximize visual transmission while maximizing insulating properties

•    FCS certified, sustainably harvested wood with no added formaldehyde for the majority of the wood on the project.

•    Diversion of over 85% of construction waste from landfill thru extensive recycling.

•    Planned for installation in the spring 2009, the project will include rooftop solar photovoltaic panels that will generate 15% of the community center’s energy needs and will include a solar hot water heating used to preheat water for showers.
